The Fredonia Academy
The Fredonia Academy as seen at a gathering in 1865. Within two years the Academy closed, having been replaced by the new Fredonia Normal School. The Normal School survived for over 70 years despite a tragic fire in 1900, eventually giving way to the State University at Fredonia. S.U.N.Y. Fredonia as it is known today is the direct decendent of the original Fredonia Academy that was begun by Pomfret's early settlers as a way to make education a top priority in their young community. The site in this picture of the original Fredonia Academy is currently home of another proud institution-the 1891 Opera House and Fredonia Village Hall.
